Alderson: The Mets are still poorly involved with George Springer

Talking to Jon Heyman from MLB Network on his podcast (Big Time Baseball Podcast), New York Mets team president Sandy Alderson provided an update on ongoing work George Springer saga.

Springer, 31, fits New York’s needs in a tee. A central player with a strong bat probably fits the criteria of any team, but the Connecticut native appeared as a shoo-in to land in Flushing all winter.

The Toronto Blue Jays were Springer’s most visible contender outside the Mets, but apart from the two teams, there wasn’t much traction (publicly known) to talk about.

In addition, with the addition of Francisco Lindor and Carlos Carrasco on this season’s salary, there are a few more gaps to be added to the list and contract extensions for Lindor, Michael Comfort, and probably others, the Mets may not be in as strong a position as they were until late.

Although, as Alderson noted on Heyman’s podcast, the Mets and Springer still keep each other.

“Given the level of emotion [and] enthusiasm around the Mets, I don’t think we were removed from his list, “said Alderson. “I’d say we’re still engaged, in a weak way, to Springer.”

With a hole in the center field still to be filled and an obvious interest on both sides, everyone can play a little hard to get. I look for the course at this time of year.
