AFC East Note: Saleh, Darnold, Patriots, Bill

Robert Saleh has signed a contract with jets today, making him the 20th head coach in franchise history. Speaking to the media, the former 49ers defensive coordinator indicated that he would look for specific types of players as he helped the general manager. Joe Douglas complete the list.

“There are no shortcuts to success, and I’m committed to working with Joe to build this team the right way: with talented players who play fast and smart, and with a staff that supports and helps them grow through it all.” Saleh said (via the team’s website).

Douglas, who led the search for a coach with the team president Hymie ELHA, mentioned that Saleh believes in many of the same directors that the executive brought from Philadelphia when he joined the Jets in 2019.

“We talked to some great coaches, but Rob is the right partner and leader for us.” Douglas said. “His vision for this team is in line with what we have worked to establish here for the past two years.”

Saleh, 41, was an early favorite for the job, based on the strength of his SF defense. In 2020, the Niners finished fifth in total yards, seventh in speed yards and fourth in permitted passing yards. In 2019, Saleh’s D lost only 169.2 meters of competition – the lowest average since then Rex Ryan2009 Jets D.
