No one can say for sure if there are extraterrestrial civilizations, but a new study suggests that the Milky Way is full of them, although many could be dead.
The research, which can be read in the arXiv repository, was written by experts from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the California Institute of Technology and the Santiago High School in Corona, California. He uses the famous Drake equation and established that intelligent life could have appeared. 8 billion years after the formation of the Milky Way.
“Because we cannot assume a low probability of annihilation, it is possible that intelligent life elsewhere in the galaxy is still too young to be observed by us,” the researchers wrote in the study. “Therefore, our findings may imply that intelligent life may be common in the galaxy, but it is still young, supporting the optimistic outlook for practicing [search for extraterrestrial intelligence]. “

Experts have also looked at where other civilizations in the universe may live, noting that it is possible to live on planets in the galactic habitable zone, places in the galaxy where there is an abundance of metals. This could be about 13,000 light-years from the galactic center, the researchers noted.
By comparison, the solar system and the Earth are about 25,000 light-years from the galactic center. A light year, which measures the distance in space, is about 6 trillion miles.
However, the researchers also noted that the potential for self-annihilation in galactic intelligent life is “extremely influential”, suggesting that any intelligent life could have already been destroyed.

“[I]If smart life is destroyed, it is not surprising that there is little or no smart life elsewhere, “the researchers added.
Although there is no “explicit” evidence that intelligent life will eventually be annihilated, researchers have cited research dating back to the 1960s that progress in science and technology “will inevitably lead to complete destruction and biological degeneration.”
Some potential scenarios proposed by researchers include war, climate change and the development of biotechnology.

So far, more than 4,500 exoplanets have been discovered, only a small part considering that it has the properties to contain life. A study published in November suggested that the galaxy may actually contain 300 million planets capable of supporting life.
