Abinader, the first six months with great challenges

Six months have passed since the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) took over the executive branch, after 16 years with the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) in power.

Meanwhile, the new president, Luis Abinader, has stood out for the application of the various policies and styles of previous presidents. They. He appointed women in all the governorships of the country, eliminated their representation expenses and assumed a monthly social cause to which he donated his salary.

This was a busy first semester. The president confessed that he works 16 hours a day.

In addition to all the challenges that are presented to any president, Abinader faces the ravages of the Covid-19 pandemic. In the country, deaths and infections continued to rise, while the first vaccines to immunize the population were expected by the end of January, in August and January, the highest peaks of infection appeared.

However, it was only yesterday that it was announced that the first emergency batch would arrive. The presentation of the National Vaccination Plan, announced this month, was also expected from the beginning of his government.

Despite the circumstances, several works were inaugurated in different provinces and, although the prospects are more uncertain than usual, the delivery of the Monte Grande dam, which began in 2009, was promised for the next few years.

It is also expected to build a new bridge linking the national district with Santo Domingo Este and to build an extension of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) in the east.

He also announced the construction of an airport and about 3,000 hotel rooms in Pedernales; however, there were still no signs that such work had begun.
