Abinader gets on a bus to open a corridor

President Luis Abinader announced yesterday that the government is working on a massive urban transport project, which includes the transformation of the structuring axes of the Great Santo Domingo, the expansion of subway lines and the creation of mass transportation lines in Santiago.

These measures were reported during the start of the bus corridor on Avenida José Núñez de Cáceres, whose aim, according to the President, is to promote access to mobility and metropolitan opportunities for all citizens.

“Included are actions aimed at creating a public metropolitan network related to regulated alternative services and articulating them with greater connectivity and efficiency of the transport system as a whole,” said Abinader.

The president stressed that the 10-kilometer-long Núñez de Cáceres corridor connects the city from north to south, impacting on the mobility of more than eight sectors of the capital. In addition, it connects with the second Santo Domingo metro line.

Among the measures taken by the government to “favor” the corridor are the synchronization of traffic lights at the traffic control center of the National Institute of Transit and Land Transport (Intrant) and giving priority to buses transiting via.

In Greater Santo Domingo, more than 10,000 people are mobilized every day, leading to about 3 million trips, 42% by private transport, 36% by public transport, 21% on foot and less than 1% use bicycles as transport means . travel.

During his speech, President Abinader stressed that the commissioning of the corridor is a change in the operating system, from concho vehicle units to modern, safe and less expensive buses.

“These first-class buses will provide quality and plan journeys that migrate from the private vehicle to the public as an alternative,” he said.

Abinader assured that the government will support the operator in a process of training its staff, so that the service it provides is of the highest quality. “All this will mean a change in the quality of services and the quality of life for citizens,” he added.

At the end of his speech, he indicated that the project is about “win-win” and called on the union to thank the unions and collaborators “who understood the need to organize” for the benefit of the Dominicans.

At the event, the senator and president of the National Confederation of Transport Organizations (Conatra), Antonio Marte, said that the sector is willing to work with the Government to transform the transport system in the country.

He said it was urgent to organize the sector, as it is not possible for users to continue to pay the consequences of the prevailing disturbance in the transport system.
