The New York Yankees reported Wednesday that manager Aaron Boone took medical leave to undergo a pacemaker installation at a Tampa hospital near the American League club’s spring training facility.
Boone, who turns 48 next week, is gearing up for his fourth season as Yankees manager. He played 12 years in the major leagues, especially with the Cincinnati Reds and a season with New York.
“As many of you know, I had open heart surgery in 2009 and I wanted everyone to understand where I am in terms of the procedure that is taking place today,” Boone said in a press release.
“For the past six to eight weeks, I have had mild symptoms of dizziness, lack of energy and difficulty breathing. As a result, I underwent a series of tests and exams in New York before the start of spring training, including several visits with a team of specialists at heart, “Boone said.
“While heart control has returned to normal, there have been indications of a low heart rate that, after further consultations with Tampa doctors, requires a pacemaker,” he added.
“My faith is strong and my spirit is high. I am in great spirit, because I know I am in good hands with the doctors and medical staff here at St. Joseph’s Hospital. The doctors are confident in today’s operation that will allow me to resume all my regular professional and personal activities and it will give me a positive long-term health prognosis without having to change anything in my lifestyle, ”Boone said.
Boone is part of a big baseball family. His brother Brett, his father Bob and his grandfather Ray also played in the major leagues.
