An American Airlines pilot reported seeing “a long cylindrical object” flying above his plane on a flight from Ohio to Arizona on Sunday.
The encounter with the unidentified flying object took place over New Mexico as AA Flight 2292 was bound for Phoenix from Cincinnati.
The pilot called ATC shortly after noon local time on Feb. 22 to report that he had seen the object, the Federal Aviation Administration said.
“Do you have any targets here? We just let something go over us,” the pilot hears in radio transmission, recorded and published by the blog site Deep Black Horizon. ‘I hate to say this – it looked like a long cylindrical object that almost looked like some kind of cruise missile moving very quickly. It passed right over us. ‘
The FAA told NBC News in a statement that air traffic controllers “have not seen any object in the area on their radar scopes.”
American Airlines confirmed that the radio call was from one of its flights, but delayed further inquiries to the FBI.
“After a debriefing with our flight crew and additional information received, we can confirm that this radio transmission came from American Airlines flight 2292 on February 21,” the airline said.
The FBI told NBC they are investigating the incident.
