A magnitude 6.7 earthquake shook southern Chile

A magnitude 6.7 earthquake shook southern Chile on Sunday, with no casualties or damage reported so far.

The earthquake took place in the Pacific Ocean at 18:39 and had its epicenter 140 kilometers southwest of Corral, almost 900 kilometers from Santiago in the south of the country, the United States Geological Survey reported. It took place at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles).

It was possible to perceive it in five regions of southern Chile: Ñuble, La Araucanía, Biobío, Los Ríos and Los Lagos.

The National Emergency Bureau of the Interior Ministry described the movement as “medium intensity”. There are currently no reports of damage to people or property, he added, and basic services are functioning normally.

The Navy’s hydrographic and oceanographic service reported that the movement did not meet the conditions to issue a tsunami alert.

Commander Rodrigo Holzapel, from the Toltén fire brigade in the La Araucanía region, said they had not received any emergency calls after the quake.
