49ers have a horrible poker face.
We all see that they hate their hand. Everyone knows he wants to give up Jimmy Garoppolo and replace Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford. Which makes both moves difficult.
Suppose the 49ers get a lot for Stafford – maybe the Lions will trade him for a second-round pick in 2021 and a second-round pick in 2022 – and the 49ers accept the offer. In that case, what would happen to Garoppolo’s commercial value?
It would disappear.
Suddenly, the 49ers would have two expensive veteran defenders on their roster and would have exceeded the cap. A quarterback should leave – every team would understand that. So the teams would just wait for the 49ers to release Garoppolo. Forget about offering 49ers selections
And suppose the 49ers get a great offer for Garoppolo – maybe the Patriots are offering their second-round pick in 2021 for him – and the 49ers accept the offer. In that case, what would happen to Stafford’s business value?
It would be a rocket.
Suddenly, the 49ers would not have quarterbacks under contract – they would be desperate for Stafford. And the Lions would know that. So the asking price for a first-round pick and a second-round pick or two first-round picks could increase. Who knows?
It seems to me that the 49ers need to buy Stafford and unload Garoppolo at the same time. In the same business.
I’m talking about a three-way trade.
49ers could send Jimmy Garoppolo to the Patriots or another team. And that team could send a choice in the second round to the lions. The 49ers could send a second-round pick to the Lions. And the Lions could send the 49ers Stafford.
Who would say no?
