The incident happened around 19.00 on Allegheny Boulevard next to B Street.
A 75-year-old woman was crossing the street when she was hit by a brown Honda Civic traveling west on Allegheny Boulevard, officials say.
The driver was believed to be a Hispanic man who fled the scene.
Action News spoke to a man who said he was riding a Septa bus on Allegheny Boulevard when the accident occurred and the bus stopped abruptly.
“One car was trying to overtake another and hit the pedestrian and hit it so hard that it overturned,” said David, a witness to the incident. “Back in the air, the sneakers came off and everything. I was on the bus when that happened. The bus stopped and the driver called the police and everything.”
The woman, whose identity remains unknown, was taken to Temple University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, officials say.
A man believed to be the driver has been taken into custody as officials continue to gather evidence at this time.
