The girl was reported missing in the Chapman St. area of New Carlisle, Indiana at around 6:30 p.m. and was found dead about two hours later, according to a press release from Assistant Commander Dave Wells of the St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit. .
New Carlisle is located about 15 miles west of South Bend.
According to the release, an autopsy is scheduled for Sunday.
The department is not releasing names or additional details at this time, Wells said.
Police are asking anyone with information about the case to call the homicide department while the investigation is ongoing.
Neighbors living in the complex near the forest where the girl was found called the incident “disturbing.”
“Very disturbing, very frightening, these days you don’t know what’s going to happen because you don’t know what’s going to happen. It can happen anywhere, anytime,” neighbor Allie Sadler told CNN affiliate WBND. “I think it has suddenly been quiet here.”
