Apple is developing some major improvements to the iPad home screen as part of its next major operating system, iOS and iPadOS 15, according to a new report by Mark Gurman for Bloomberg.
This will include adding widgets to your iPad’s home screen, just like iOS 14-enabled widgets on your iPhone’s home screen. The report calls this the biggest change to the iPad home screen ever. IPhone users will benefit from an “updated” lock screen user interface.
More details about the redesigned iPad home screen are not disclosed. However, iPad users anticipate a significant overhaul of the iPad software after the release of the latest generation iPad Pro.
The new iPad Pro with M1 offers a lot of processing power, but the operating system remains limited in key areas, such as efficient multitasking of applications. A new home screen system can allow users to get the most out of the latest Apple devices.
The new notification features will allow users to customize alert preferences based on current activity: such as driving, working, sleeping, or other categories. For example, the iPhone might be set to sound only when the user is not at work. A smarter automatic response system for notifications is also being developed.
In line with Apple’s emphasis on privacy and security, the report says iOS 15 will also include new alerts to inform users when apps are secretly collecting data about them.
Apple is expected to unveil iOS 15 at the annual WWDC conference, which begins on June 7. It is also said that the company is working on new features for iMessage that would compete more closely with WhatsApp, however Bloomberg describes this project as early in development and may not perform the cut for iOS 15.
