George Floyd Square in Minneapolis has special instructions for whites

White people who want to visit George Floyd Square, the intersection where the 46-year-old black man died last May, will have to follow special instructions.

The intersection of E. 38th Street and Chicago Avenue – where a bystander recorded the now-famous video showing then-Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin pressing his knee on Floyd’s neck – was converted into a memorial and was completed shortly after his death renamed George Floyd Square. .

A sign at the entrance to the square welcomes visitors to “A Sacred Space for Community, Public Grief, and Protest.”

The sign indicates the area is where Floyd “breathed his last under the knee of” Chauvin, who was found guilty of multiple charges in Floyd’s death Tuesday.

The sign urges visitors to “honor the space as a place to connect and mourn as caring people.” However, it includes a special set of instructions for whites.

White visitors have to ‘come and listen, learn, mourn and witness’.

“Remember that you are here to support, not to be supported,” the sign reads.

White people are asked to “contribute to the energy of the space, rather than drain it.” Any “processing” should be brought to “other white people” so that “BIPOC” (an acronym for “Black and indigenous people of color”) is not harmed.

When white visitors see their fellow white people doing ‘problematic things’, they are encouraged to ‘speak with compassion to take the burden (of) black people and our siblings or color where necessary’.

After all, white people are encouraged to “engage rather than escalate, so that it can be a learning opportunity rather than a disruption.”

According to Fox News’ Matt Finn, who posted the photo to Twitter, the board isn’t the only one of its kind to pick out white people who want to honor the space.

Since Floyd’s death, the area has been transformed into an “autonomous zone” that has brought near record levels of violent crime and gun violence.

Concrete barricades erected by Minneapolis last year to protect demonstrations from traffic now act as barriers to an “autonomous zone” co-opted by armed individuals who declare law enforcement undesirable as gangs, drug trafficking and gun violence have disrupted local business activities .

Floyd’s death sparked nationwide protests against police last summer and rekindled a debate about racial inequality in the American legal system. Chauvin’s guilty verdict caused a wave of relief, but many argued that the country still has a long way to go to achieve racial equality.
