Ferrari has just released some photos of its upcoming limited edition, 812 focused on parts and, wow. It looks wild, with all sorts of new aerodynamic features, such as a giant boomerang-shaped channel in the hood and the blades that replace the rear window. But the body is not the craziest thing about this new 812 – it would be the engine, which makes 830 horsepower at 9500 rpm.
As a brief reminder, the 812 uses a naturally aspirated 6.5-liter V-12. We live in a world where high power figures are common, but power like this without forced induction or any hybrid assistance is extraordinary. And getting a 6.5-liter engine to spin well over 9000 rpm is no easy task. More details about the engine are coming, but Ferrari says it has managed to get these numbers with new internal systems, plus a new variable valve timing system and a new exhaust.
Its reduced 9500 rpm line makes this 65-degree V-12 the largest Ferrari road car engine of all time and will be one of the most powerful production engines. Only the future Gordon Murray T.50 with a 12,100 rpm V-12, Aston Martin Valkyrie with an 11,000 rpm V-12 and a Mercedes-AMG Project One with an 11,000 rpm V-6 will beat him. And the three are all ultra-limited, seven-digit hypercars.
Ferrari has not yet revealed the name, price or production numbers expected for this new 812. They will come to an event live on May 5 along with more details about the car. This will join a rather amazing line of crazy Ferrari offerings with the V-12 front engine, which includes 599 GTO and F12tDf.
It is rumored that all future V-12 Ferraris will have some kind of hybrid assistance. We do not know if this is the last engine, but if it is, what path.
