Tuesday’s incident sparked street protests in Ohio’s largest city after a Minneapolis jury convicted a former white police officer of killing George Floyd last year by kneeling on his neck.
Authorities refused to name the girl. But family members and children’s services in Franklin County identified her as 16-year-old Ma’Khia Bryant.
The officer who opened fire was not identified, but appears in the video as white. The chief said he would be “taken off the street” pending an investigation.
In a rare move, Columbian police released a video with the cameras on Tuesday, hours after it took place.
Acting Police Chief Michael Woods said the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) has opened an investigation into the case, which began when officers responded at 16:44 ET (2044 GMT) to a 911 emergency call from someone who reported an attempted stabbing in a home in the southeastern part of the city.
An Ohio BCI spokesman confirmed Wednesday that an investigation is ongoing.
