Disney and Sony Pictures have signed a multi-year “content license agreement” that will bring new Sony movie releases, starting with its 2022 movies, on Disney-owned platforms. The deal also gives Disney rights to many of Sony’s older movies, including Spider Man titles – which means that movies with the role of web-slinger, which are particularly missing from the Disney Plus collection of Marvel movies, could eventually reach the streaming service.
Sony’s film releases from 2022 to 2026 are included in the transaction, and Disney will have access to them following the “1 Pay TV window”. Starting in 2022, that window, which follows the cinema and home broadcasts of a movie, will be owned by Netflix, thanks to an agreement announced earlier this month. (That means the new Sony movies will hit theaters first, then rent and pay, then Netflix, and then finally go to Disney platforms, including Disney Plus.)
So, even if the Disney and Sony agreement means that Disney will have no news Spider Man movies immediately after their theatrical broadcasts, the company will end up including them in its long-term streaming catalog – something Disney appreciates most.
Giving people access to another set of movies from his ever-growing collection of Marvel properties could give people more reason to subscribe to Disney Plus. That said it all, though Spider Man movies are heading for Disney Plus, which won’t make the Disney movie infinite glove complete: 2008 The incredible Hulk (the one with Edward Norton as Hulk) would not yet be available for service. Unless Disney makes some kind of deal with Universal, that is.
Other Sony Pictures properties, such as Jumanji and Hotel Transilvania, are also included in the agreement, according to a press release. Disney’s Hulu will also have access to “a significant number of library titles” immediately after June, according to the statement.
