After many rumors, Apple finally introduced AirTag during today’s special event. Apple’s tracking element works on the ultra-wideband U1 chip and relies on the Find My network to work even offline. However, an interesting detail that was not mentioned during the main presentation is that even Android users can identify an AirTag in Lost mode.
Because AirTag is deeply embedded in the Apple ecosystem, an iOS device is needed to function. Both the configuration process and the tracking are done through the Find Me app, which makes the accessory not ideal for those with an Android phone.
However, Apple wanted to make sure that people would have a better chance of recovering their lost items. According to a new support article posted today on Apple’s official website, AirTags will be readable by any other NFC-compatible device with iPhone or even Android devices in Lost mode.
So, even if someone with an Android phone finds your article, that person can easily approach their AirTag device to find out more details about the owner of that article. AirTag will provide a URL with a custom message that can be added to the article tracker using the Find Me app.
Touch and hold the top of your iPhone or NFC-enabled smartphone on the white side of the AirTag. Touch the notification that appears. This opens a website that provides information about AirTag, including its serial number. If the owner has marked it as lost, you may see a message with information on how to contact the owner. You can contact the owner to let them know that you have found their AirTag tag. You can view a message in lost mode on any NFC-enabled smartphone, such as an iPhone or Android phone.
AirTags will be available for purchase starting April 30 and each tag costs $ 29. There is also a 4 pack available for $ 99.
