Google updates on iPhone are back with Gmail, Search, and Maps

Earlier last month, Google began launching new iOS versions of the YouTube app family after a long unspecified break. Gmail, Google Calendar, Docs and other apps were updated today in an apparent return to normal for iPhone and iPad owners.

Update 4/19: Google Photos had its first update since December. Version 5.38 has no changes in front of the user and only includes “bug fixes and performance improvements”. Meanwhile, the Google Assistant has also been recently updated.

Update 4/12: Last week, Chrome for iOS saw a bug fix after it passed without a November update. Other notable releases from the last month include Google Drive and Classroom, which got a faster homepage and a new commenting experience.

Meanwhile, Google Maps was updated today to version 5.65 of 5.58 released on December 1st. There are no obvious changes with this update.

Update 3/14: Since the beginning of March, Google updates have continued to be released. Notable launches in the last two weeks include Google Duo, Meet – a new tapping, voice, and announcement view.

The latest update is for the Google app. Launched on Sunday night (PT), this app hosts Search, Discover stream and Google Lens visual searches. Release notes for version 149.0 (from 137.2 on December 5, 2020) are quite generic:

Troubleshooting and improving performance.

We fixed user-reported issues and added new features to provide a better search experience.

Original 3/1: In recent weeks, YouTube and YouTube Music have seen a handful of patches. Last Friday, Google Podcast received a new version, and on Monday it sees a trio of big updates for the iPhone: Google Calendar, Gmail and Docs / Sheets / Slides.

For the email app, it’s the first new update since December 1st. Release notes for version 6.0.210124 specify only “bug fixes and performance improvements”. There is an error in which iPhone owners encountered a “This app is out of date” message when trying to sign in with a new Google Account.

The change logs for these other productivity customers are just as vague. All of today’s updates show application privacy details, although they were added some time before these new releases. Some initially speculated that the lack of updates was due to Apple nutrition labels, but – whatever the reason – this was not a normal winter break, as application development continued on the Android side.

Drive was last updated in December, along with Google Search, Photos and Maps. These apps don’t have privacy tags yet. Meanwhile, Chrome remains on version 87 even though 88 was released 41 days ago on all other platforms. The next browser update will be released later this week.

That being said, the lack of new versions of apps has not affected the launch of features, given how frequently Google uses updates on the server.
