Subreddit moderators can now request access to Reddit Talk, and the company will soon begin inviting them to try it. Reddit suggests that the cameras could be used for “Questions and Answers, AMA [Ask Me Anything sessions], lectures, radio-style discussions, community feedback sessions “or just leisure.
At first, only subreddit moderators will be able to start a discussion, although they can invite other speakers to host with them. Any Reddit user can listen via iOS and Android. Hosts will be able to exclude users and prevent them from re-entering conversations.
Listeners can interact with conversations by reacting with emojis. If they have something to add, they can raise a virtual hand and a host can invite them to speak. Hosts will be able to see how much karma each user raising a hand has.
Reddit says it will work with the community to provide the enrollment function with “the best possible moderation experience.” Critics of the club say there have been cases of racism, harassment and on that application.
Based on a few early screenshots, Reddit Talk looks like a more colorful version of the Clubhouse. While Clubhouse is about people using their real identities and photos, Reddit Talk users will be able to use aliases and avatars.
The feature will give users another way to communicate with each other beyond the traditional text threads of the platform. They can also enjoy live images, videos, chats and streams.
It’s a surprising move from Reddit, given that many other major platforms are working on their own versions of audio chat cameras. Along with Clubhouse (which has just closed another round of funding valued at $ 4 billion), Twitter, Spotify, Discord, Slack and LinkedIn have such features. Facebook is the one that adds videos to the mix.
