After switching to Chromium, Microsoft Edge exploded in popularity and quickly became the second most popular desktop browser, and now continues to add useful features to tempt Chrome users. The latest addition to Microsoft Edge is “performance mode”.
Launching first on the Canary channel, the “performance mode” in Microsoft Edge is designed to improve the way the browser uses available resources. In practice, Microsoft says the new mode will improve overall speed and responsiveness, while “optimizing” battery, processor and RAM usage. Apparently, the mode can also be adjusted according to your browsing habits.
Performance mode helps you optimize speed, responsiveness, memory, CPU and battery usage. Performance enhancements may vary depending on your individual specifications and browser habits.
A specific change noted by Microsoft is that the “Sleep Tabs” feature in the Edge will be locked for five minutes when performance mode is turned on. “Sleep tabs” essentially freeze a tab left open in the background, saving resources when not in active use.
The performance mode is now released in version 91.0.856.0, available on the Canary channel. Switching is available in the “System” section of the settings menu.
