Super Mario 64 is a classic, but if you ever wanted Mario to die in the game true, your wishes are about to come true.
A PC port made by fans called Super Mario 64 Plus appeared earlier this month and has since hit 30,000 downloads, showing that there is a huge market for killing Mario once and for all. But it’s not just a permadeath option that SM64 + adds – along with some quality of life changes, such as bug fixes, an improved camera and 60FPS added by interpolation, there’s also the ability to continue level after grabbing a star. How many times have you been kicked out of a level exactly when you were about to reach your goal, all because you accidentally took 100 coins? Probably not that many, but still! Change of life.
There is also a mode that seems to reduce the game to flat colors, something called “Daredevil Mode” and the ability to edit the shooting distance, if you want to reproduce Mario’s failed vision after 35 years of being the most famous installer in the world without any health insurance. There’s even support for texture pack modes, if you think you can improve your Nintendo art from the ’90s.
And before we get into the comments shouting about DMCA removals, The port’s creators are pretty sure Nintendo won’t bother – After all, they are more interested in eliminating threats to their sales, and since there are no official Mario games on the PC, Super Mario 64 is not a direct threat. Probable.
You can download it here if you always wanted to play a Mario game with a PlayStation controller on your Microsoft computer. You’re a maniac.
