A family’s beloved dog nearly drowned after falling into a backyard pool when the owners were not home. Fortunately, another dog was around, who noticed the problem and saved the day.

The incident took place in a house in the city of Boksburg in South Africa, reports Southwest News Service (SWNS). Byron Thanarayen, the pet owner, told the media that he and his wife were initially confused when they returned home and found the dogs wet.

“We tried to look for clues as to where he might have wet his head,” he told SWNS. “We thought he might have dipped his head in the water, but there was no mess in the house to support that suggestion.”

The family decided to check their security cameras, at which point they discovered that the smaller dog, Chuky, had fallen into the pool. Fortunately, the older dog, Jessie, was nearby and working to lift Chucky safely.

“It was heartbreaking to watch,” Thanarayen said. “We’re still trying to watch the video today, just thinking about what could have happened if Jessie hadn’t been there.”

It looks like Jessie took 34 minutes to successfully get Chucky out of the pool. Apparently, the smaller dog’s wet fur fell out of Jessie’s mouth.

Thanarayen continued: “I am very proud of her, considering that she is the youngest. Our dogs know how to swim, but they always swim with us and not when we are not with them.”

Since the incident, the family has said they are installing a fence around the pool.
