Microsoft has announced that a public preview for Visual Studio 2022 will be available soon. Along with a number of changes and enhancements, the latest application development software will come with a new Mac version that includes a native user interface, improved performance and reliability, support for macOS accessibility features, and more.
Microsoft has shared the first public preview of the Visual Studio 2022 IDE, which will arrive this summer in a blog post today.
Along with the increased speed and cleaner design, the app will be 64-bit, lighter and provide a better experience for remote collaboration.
The next major version of Visual Studio will be faster, more affordable and easier, designed for both learners and those who build solutions on an industrial scale. For the first time, Visual Studio will have 64 bits. The user experience will feel cleaner, smarter and more action-oriented.
Development teams have become more geographically dispersed than ever. Over the last year, it has become clear that organizations need their development teams to work together safely, deliver solutions faster, and continually improve end-user satisfaction and value. We facilitate collaboration with better GitHub integration, simplifying the transition from idea to code in the cloud.
Especially for Mac, Visual Studio 2022 brings a new native interface for MacOS, improved performance and reliability and can capitalize on all the accessibility features of the operating system.
Like the Windows version, Visual Studio 2022 for Mac will also come with the new GitHub integration.
Our goal with Visual Studio 2022 for Mac is to create a modern, Mac-adapted .NET IDE that delivers the productive experience you loved in Visual Studio. We are working to move Visual Studio for Mac to the native UI for MacOS, which means it will have better performance and reliability. It also means that Visual Studio for Mac can take full advantage of all the accessibility features built into macOS. We update the menus and terminology in the IDE to make Visual Studio more consistent between Mac and Windows. The new Git experience from Visual Studio will also come to Visual Studio for Mac, starting with the introduction of the Git Changes tool window.
Microsoft says these are just “some key aspects of our ongoing work, but we welcome your initial thoughts on the direction we are taking for Visual Studio 2022.”
The company has not announced a firm date for when the first public preview will be released, but in the meantime you can check existing feature requests and also post them here.
At this time, the first three feature requests are colored tabs, vertical tabs, and Linux support. Read about all the changes that come with Visual Studio 2022 here.
