Days Gone director John Garvin says the metacritical score is all for Sony

The news that a pitch for Days Gone 2 had been rejected by Sony prompted David Jaffe, the game designer known for creating God of War and Twisted Metal, to host video interviews with Days Gone directors on his YouTube channel. Last week he had Jeff Ross, while yesterday it was the turn of John Garvin (who, by the way, was also the writer of the game).

Garvin revealed that he left Sony Bend just days after the game’s release in April 2019. When Jaffe asked him how he got the first wave of Days Gone reviews, Garvin replied:

The Last of Us Remake in Works, Days Gone 2 Not Happening – Zvon

I was hard to be honest, because again … This is just the reality of Sony, the Metacritic score is everything. If you are the creative director of a franchise and your game reaches 70, you will not be the creative director of this franchise for a very long time.

Indeed, Sony has had a number of critically acclaimed game releases, such as Uncharted, The Last of Us, Horizon Zero Dawn, God of War, Marvel’s Spider-Man, Dreams and, more recently, Ghost of Tsushima.

On the other hand, there is evidence that Sony could actually seek both outstanding critical acclaim and commercial success today. For example, Japan Studio’s Gravity Rush 2 had an average Metacritic score of 80, but it didn’t sell very well and this was the last game Team Gravity ever made. Japan Studio as a whole has been essentially shut down and will now focus on supporting Asobi Team, producers of Astro Bot Rescue Mission and Astro’s Playroom, as confirmed by Sony earlier this month.

Days Gone may not have had high critical acclaim (although yours really enjoyed it), but they sold pretty well and managed to find a dedicated fan base. This was demonstrated by the Change.org petition asking Sony to verify a continuation; has already received over 32.6K signatures and even Jeff Ross himself has asked his Twitter followers to participate while tagging SIE Worldwide Studio head Hermen Hulst.

Days Gone is set to launch on the PC in a month from now. Perhaps a successful launch on this platform could convince Sony to finally develop another tranche, thus satisfying all those eager to follow that cliffhanger.
