The ingenuity of the Mars Helicopter completes a “rotation test”, it is approaching flight

Plans for the first flight test of NASA’s Mars copter were delayed after failing to complete a test last weekend, but now the team behind it says the spacecraft has completed a complete rotation. As described in a blog post and a video update, the team appears to be taking two approaches to resolving the issue it has identified.

A change in commands in the flight sequence was apparently enough to help complete the test, while work on a change in the Ingenuity helicopter’s flight software continues. They tested the new software, but its transfer and upload could take several days to complete, with the boat currently living 174 million miles from Earth. A decision on what to do could happen tonight and we may know about the new test flight schedule as soon as Saturday morning, so stay tuned.
