The future GMC Hummer EV stands out with its monstrous combination of size and all-electric power, but the most unique feature is the one that makes it a little more agile. I just took a closer look at what it actually looks like in real life.

The “Crab Mode”, also called the “Crab Walk”, was designed to use the four-wheel steering of the Hummer line and the electric power to move freely diagonally from the stop, all four wheels turn in the same direction and go forward , regardless of the position of the car itself. In theory, it is an off-road feature designed to greatly increase the situational maneuverability of what is already established to be a king of routes. In practice, it can also be used as a fascinating and useless way to show the incredible feature set of Hummer EV in traffic.

This video, originally captured by Instagram user Michael H. Fletcher and distributed by the Hummer Mod Mafia specialty store, features a pre-production GMC Hummer EV truck (the pick-up bed model, distinct from the slightly smaller Hummer EV SUV) that uses the feature in stop-and-go traffic after what appears to be an off-road test day. The function does not seem to serve any significant purpose, but the car is able to move at speeds at a strange angle, diagonally, with the movement of the crab engaged.

The view is annoying, but that’s part of the goal. The Hummer EV has the ability to move quite literally, like nothing else on the road. If the truck has them, you might as well try the gadgets.
