Ahead of next week’s Apple Spring event, rumors continue to suggest that a new Apple Pencil may be on the way. Following previous reports of a new Apple Pencil 3, a video posted today on Twitter claims to provide a closer look at the changes – or lack thereof – that may be on the way.
The video was posted by a anonymous Twitter user which claims to obtain information from Apple’s supply chain. It corroborates an image I saw leaked last month that also claimed to look like the new Apple Pencil.
Based on the leaks we’ve seen so far, the Apple Pencil 3 seems to be very similar to the second-generation Apple Pencil, but with one key change: returning to a glossy finish.
The first generation Apple Pencil has a glossy design and is charged by Lightning connectivity. Apple continues to sell the first Apple Pencil for the iPad mini and 9.7-inch entry-level iPad.
In addition to the iPad Pro 2018, however, Apple introduced the second-generation Apple Pencil with a matte design and the ability to attach magnetically to the side of the iPad Pro for pairing and charging. This is also supported by the iPad Air introduced last year.
The supposed Apple Pencil 3 seems to combine these two models. It seems to have a flat edge to allow it to attach magnetically to the iPad Air and iPad Pro for charging, but with a glossy design.
At this point, all we know about the Apple Pencil 3 is what we managed to get from the leaked images. There may be, or probably even be, other changes under the hood, such as new features, gestures, or greater accuracy. Changes could also be reserved to enhance the experience with the mini-LED display that comes on the 12.9-inch iPad Pro.
