President Luis Abinader said that one of the most determined bets the Government is making is national agricultural production.

The president, on Wednesday, said that the beginning of the rice harvest in Cotuí, María Trinidad Sánchez province, said that the main food crop available in the country is rice and that between 250 and 300 thousand people directly depend on it in the entire production process. immediate.

“The Dominican Republic is considered a self-sufficient country in rice production, a staple crop in the diet of the Dominican people, one of the largest consumption environments in Latin America,” he said.

The President indicated that rice production covers all regions of the country, with 1.3 million land loads planted throughout the country. “And this year we have achieved 20% more performance per task compared to the previous period of agricultural production.”

He said a harvest of 7.6 million quintals is expected for this year, noting that this production will be higher than last year, which in the spring was about 6.8 million quintals harvested in the spring of that year.

“For this year’s autumn harvest, we hope to exceed by more than 700 thousand quintals the harvest from the same period of the previous year, which reached 5.2 million quintals to reach 5.9 quintals harvested in 2021,” he said he.

He pointed out that rice production contributes about 30,000 million pesos to the Dominican economy.

He indicated that there are 32,000 rice producers in the country that generate over 300,000 thousand direct jobs.
