Tourists leave the third wave of Covid behind to spend their vacation in the country

While a new wave of Covid-19 is fighting in South America against the strain originating in Brazil, in the Dominican Republic during January-February this year, 36,990 visitors from this region arrived at various airports in the country.

From Brazil, where P.1 appeared as a new variant of Coronavirus and which can be up to twice as transmissible, in the first two months of the year 3,820 visitors were received, according to Aerodom statistics.

Other nations on alert

The country of origin where most passengers were received in the first two months of the year was Colombia, with 9,791 foreigners. In this South American nation, since April 10, 14,509 new cases of coronavirus have been registered.

From Argentina, which has reported 19,419 new cases of the virus since April 10, 6,585 passengers were received between January and February this year.

Another country in which Covid is growing is Chile, registering 8,101 new cases of the virus two days ago. From this nation, in the first two months of 2021, 5,112 foreign visitors arrived in the Dominican Republic.

From Venezuela, 5,949 foreigners arrived during this period; there were 2,165 from Peru and 1,446 tourists from Ecuador.

When presenting new cases in these countries and the arrival of passengers from South America, it should be borne in mind that the Dominican Republic does not require a mandatory PCR test at airports, but that breath tests are performed at random.

On April 8, the director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Carissa Etienne, said South America was the region most concerned about Covid-19 infections, as cases were rising in almost all countries.

Scheduled flights

Despite PAHO warnings, Las Américas Airport (AILA) has seven flights scheduled from South America for the week of April 12-25, four from Colombia and three from Venezuela and Panama, the country where they stop. Visitors from South America, 12 flights are scheduled.

Between April 26 and June 6, there are 58 scheduled flights from Colombia and Venezuela and 94 from Panama.
