Verizon recalls 2.5 million hotspot devices it sold because of a faulty lithium-ion battery that can overheat, resulting in a fire and burn hazard.
Affected devices include Ellipsis Jetpack Mobile Hotspots with model numbers MHS900L, MHS900LS and MHS900LPP.
Verizon said Thursday it is working with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on the recall. Verizon also said it is working to find the cause of the problems and will provide customers with free Orbic Speed replacement devices.
All Ellipsis Jetpacks packages have received two over-the-air software updates related to this issue. The first displays the device ID number on the scrolling screen to make it easier to switch, and the second prevents the device from charging when connected and turned on to reduce the risk of overheating.
According to the CPSC, Verizon received 15 reports of device overheating, including six cases that led to damage to bedding or floors. Two minor burn injuries were reported.
Customers who have an affected Ellipsis Jetpack should contact Verizon through the recall site to arrange a replacement.
