Hospitals are seeing more and more young adults between the ages of 30 and 40 admitted with severe cases of Covid-19, Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said Wednesday.
“The data suggests that all of this is happening as we see a growing prevalence of variants, with 52 jurisdictions now reporting cases of concern,” Walensky said in a press briefing on the pandemic.
Coronavirus strain variants may be more transmissible and may result in more severe disease based on hospitalization data and fatality rates, according to the CDC website.
Currently, the most common variant circulating in the United States is variant B.1.1.7 in the United Kingdom. This variant is about 50% more transmissible and is likely to lead to more severe diseases.
