PHILADELPHIA – Mets third baseman JD Davis came out of Tuesday’s game against the Phillies after being hit on the left by a quick ball from Chase Anderson, but the Mets hope he avoided the worst. An X-ray of the game returned negative, leading to an initial diagnosis of contusion.
However, the Mets remain cautious about a possible hairline fracture that would not appear on an X-ray. They plan to send Davis for further testing on Wednesday, at which point they will receive a clearer picture of his status.
“This is good news for the first x-ray,” manager Luis Rojas said late Tuesday night. “We will reevaluate tomorrow.”
Davis was beating in the second half, when Anderson’s 91 mph pitch sailed up and in, hitting him directly on the left hand. He appeared to be in significant pain and left after a brief conversation with head coach Brian Chicklo. Luis Guillorme replaced Davis.
“You just hate to see guys you go to war with hit like that,” said teammate Dominic Smith. “Something up and in, it’s just hard. It’s a strange place, hand, so many injuries can happen. So many bad things can happen. It’s something you don’t want to see, something I hope isn’t too big and something it can come back from. ”
A player who broke up with the Mets two years ago, Davis spent this spring trying to prove that his offensive and defensive struggles in 2020 are a thing of the past. The Mets named him third base daily during spring training and started him at third base in each of the first two games of the season. Davis went 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored in the opener before being hit in his first appearance on set the next day.
