Florida Governor Bans Covid-19 ‘Vaccine Passports’

The injunction prohibits any government agency from issuing vaccine passports and blocks companies from requiring such documentation.

DeSantis cited freedom and privacy issues as the primary basis for the action, arguing that the implementation and enforcement of vaccine passports would “create two classes of citizens based on vaccinations.”

The warrant notes that many Floridians have not yet had the opportunity to receive a vaccine, while some may have acquired immunity through infection and other people may not be able to receive a Covid-19 vaccine for health, religious, or other reasons.

“Individual Covid-19 vaccination data is personal health information and should not be shared by any mandate,” DeSantis said.

DeSantis announced earlier this week that he would not support vaccination passports.

“It is completely unacceptable for the government or the private sector to require you to show proof of vaccination just to be able to participate in normal society,” he said at a news conference Monday.

The Governor of Florida tweeted Friday that the Florida legislature is “in the process of making these protections permanent for Floridians,” and looks forward to signing them into law soon.

Privacy fears

There are major privacy concerns regarding vaccine passports, especially if a centralized, computer-based system has been created that allows people to prove they have been vaccinated against Covid-19.

Jay Stanley, senior policy analyst at the American Civil Liberties Union, argued in an article this week for a decentralized, open source system to make sure people know how and where their data is being used.

“Does it report every time you provide ID?” Stanley asked. Every time someone asks if you want to see you got a vaccine? Does it report back to some government agency? That would be very bad too. ‘

The Biden government is working with nonprofits and technology companies to develop a set of standards by which people can prove they have received the vaccine, according to at least two government officials.

However, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said on Monday that there will be no federal mandate requiring every American to receive a vaccination record.
