10 people, including ‘heroic’ officer, murdered in Colorado supermarket

BOULDER, Colo. – Police say 10 people, including a police officer, were killed in a shooting at a supermarket in Colorado.

Boulder Police Cmdr. Kerry Yamaguchi said at a news conference on Monday that a person of interest is in custody and being treated. He gave no other details about the shooting.

He said they are still investigating and had no details on the motive.

In a later press conference, Boulder Police Chief Maris Herold said 10 people were killed. She identified murdered cop Eric Talley, whom she called “heroic.” He had been with the Boulder Police Department since 2010.

The identities of the other nine victims were not disclosed on Monday evening as police continued to notify their relatives.

The video showed a shirtless man with blood running down his leg being escorted out of the store with handcuffs by two police officers in a King Soopers supermarket.

The televised helicopter video showed law enforcement vehicles and agents gathering outside, including SWAT teams, and at least three helicopters on the roof of the store in Boulder, home of the University of Colorado, about 25 miles northwest of Denver.

Officers had their guns drawn and some of the windows at the front of the store were broken. Authorities said through a loudspeaker that the building was surrounded and that you should surrender. They told them to come out with their hands raised and unarmed.

One man who said he was shopping in the store told KCNC-TV he heard a loud bang, then he heard another, and by the third everyone was running. He said they ran to the back of the store, found the employee space, and the workers told them how to escape. He said they walked in line with their arms on the backs of those in front of them.

TV footage showed an ambulance driving away from the store, apparently with the bleeding man who had been handcuffed out of the store. Officers helped some people out of the store to get to safety.

Colorado Governor Jared Polis tweeted that he “is keeping a close eye on events at King Soopers in Boulder. My prayers are with our fellow Coloradans during this time of grief and sorrow as we learn more about the scale of the tragedy. “

Kevin Daly, owner of Under the Sun Eatery and Pizzeria Restaurant a block or so from the grocery store, said he was in his store when he saw police cars coming and customers rushing out of the grocery store. He said he had taken in several people to keep them warm, and others got on a Boulder Police bus and were taken away.
