Covid: Rash is ONLY a symptom for 21% of patients, says the KCL study

From high fever to dry cough, coronavirus is known to be associated with a number of unpleasant symptoms.

Now, new data shows that for one in five people taking Covid-19, their only symptom is a skin rash.

In another 17% of cases, a rash is the first symptom before others develop later.

The rash manifests itself in various ways, including in the form of hives or lumps. They were recorded all over the body.

The data comes from the ZOE symptom tracking application administered by King’s College London (KCL) researchers, which operated Covid throughout the pandemic.

ZOE data found that people who tested positive for Covid were 67% more likely to develop a rash than someone who was not infected.

Another independent study was conducted on 11,544 people who were asked to provide images of their eruptions.

“Surprisingly, among the respondents to the independent online survey, we found that a percentage of SARS-CoV-2 positive cases reported rash as the first presentation and 21% as the only clinical sign of COVID-19,” the researchers write.

The study was published in the British Journal of Dermatology and more than 400 people submitted images, which have now been published in an online database called Covid skin signs.

The images are classified according to the type of rash and include “Covid figures”, “purple”, “oral” and “urticarial”.

The rash manifests itself in various ways, including in the form of hives or lumps. They were recorded all over the body.

“Rash accumulates with other COVID-19 symptoms, is predictive of a positive buffer test, and occurs in a significant number of cases, either alone or before other classic symptoms,” the researchers write.

Different types of rashes related to Covid

  • COVID figures – A rash that affects the extremities, namely the toes and toes. Skin changes are known as muscles. This rash seems to be more common in younger people. The rash appears as reddish and purple swellings on the toes or feet and can affect many numbers.
  • Eczema of the neck and chest exposed – A rash that appears on the neck or chest in places exposed to sunlight. It is usually quite pink and very itchy. It can occur at any time during or after the infection and usually lasts a long time.
  • Oral – A rash that affects the lips can make them feel sore and may become dry and scaly as they recover. Pain may also occur inside the mouth.
  • Papular and vesicular – Appears as red and uneven areas that can appear anywhere on the body. It may look like bad heat. In some cases, there is only small swelling all over the skin and it is usually very itchy. The rash may also last after the person has recovered from the infection
  • Pitiriazis Rosea – An acute rash recognized by dermatologists. It is thought to be viral, although it has never been proven. It usually affects young people. Several reports of this pattern were reported during the pandemic, which first showed an initially large “herald” patch, followed a few days later by several smaller patches on the trunk or proximal limbs. It may take several months before cleaning.
  • Purpuric – Easy to recognize, as it has several red or purple spots. May cause bruise-like spots. Spots or blemishes are caused by damage to tiny superficial blood vessels with bleeding into the skin.
  • hives – It presents quite early in the infection, but it can last much later, when the affected person is no longer contagious. The rash occurs in the form of suddenly raised hives or fodder on the skin, which appear and disappear quite quickly within hours and are usually intense itching. It can involve any part of the body. If it affects the face, it can cause swelling of the lips and eyelids. It is usually treated with antihistamines.
  • Viral rash – A common pattern in viral infections with a symmetrical rash that includes numerous reddish spots or swellings over the body. It is usually accompanied by symptoms of a viral illness, such as fever, cough and malaise. Patients with suspected COVID may present with this model, but may not have other symptoms.

Almost HALF of patients with Covid have swollen salivary glands

From a high fever to a loss of smell, Covid-19 is associated with a number of unpleasant symptoms.

Now, a new study has warned that coronavirus infection can also lead to swelling of the salivary glands in the mouth.

The researchers studied 122 Covid-19 patients in Italy who caught the virus and were hospitalized between July 23 and September 7, 2020.

Subsequent meetings over a three-month period found that more than eight out of ten patients had some form of face or mouth problem as a result of the infection.

The most common was swollen salivary glands, known as ectasia, which affected 43% of patients. The salivary glands spit to help chew and swallow.

“Recognition of eruptions is important in identifying new and previous cases of Covid-19.”

Coronavirus attacks several body systems and therefore there are a number of symptoms of Covid-19.

But only the symptoms of the “classic triad” of dry cough, fever and loss of smell or taste are currently recognized by the NHS.

Loss of smell and taste was officially recognized as a symptom of Covid on May 18, 2020.

In June, KCL academics called for rashes to be considered Covid’s fourth official symptom.

Researchers at KCL have recently again called on policy makers to expand the set of recognized symptoms.

They said expanding the list of symptoms to include fatigue, sore throat, headache and diarrhea would allow the detection of “millions” of unconfirmed cases.

The current test and follow-up rules mean that tampons are only for people with a fever, continuous cough or loss of smell or taste.

Professor Tim Spector, chief scientist at Zoe, an epidemiologist at King’s College London and co-author of the latest study on rashes, said in February: anosmia misses a significant proportion of positive cases.

“We identified anosmia as a symptom in May, and our work led the government to add it to the list; now it is clear that we need to add more.

“By inviting users who have any new symptoms to take a test, we have confirmed that there are many more symptoms of Covid.”
