Deputies will not accept the party’s lines regarding the three causes

The issue of the three causes of voluntary termination arose again in the Chamber of Deputies, after the justice commission of that body chose to remove this legislative initiative from the new Criminal Code.

This decision keeps the waters divided within the National Congress, with deputies for and against this initiative, but now a third party is being added, the political parties.

Beyond the emergence of political parties, MPs have made it clear that they will not accept the “lines” that their organizations can “cut” on the issue, but rather that each MP decides in a special way.

Some MEPs even describe this “downgrade” as a “waste of time” on the part of their political organizations, maintaining their position of voting, for or against, as a personal decision.

“Political organizations need to be very careful. My organization has a position on this issue and let me tell you that the legislators, and this is the spirit I see in each of them, have their own particular position and probably the position of the parties does not affect decision-making in the chamber in the day the project is known, ”said Amado Díaz, a member of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM).

It is the ruling party, led by President Luis Abinader, that has maintained its position of support for approving abortion on three grounds, but not all lawmakers in the lower house are in favor.

An example contrary to the position held by the president was expressed by the PRM deputy, Napoleón López, who described himself as “pro-life”, leaving aside the possible impact of his party.

“We want them to let us decide, because we are the ones who have the advantage,” López said.

Nelsa Shoraya Suárez, PRM MP and member of the special commission tasked with studying the draft of voluntary termination of pregnancy, was also described as a “standard bearer of life”, but was more feasible for possible approval, without the inference of the parties.
