Now, another California electric vehicle starter, Canoo, has unveiled a pickup truck with a “cab forward” design that places the driver almost directly on the front wheels.
Instead of a hood, the Canoo truck has a flat front like a van. This allows more space for the loading bed space, without making the truck too big in general.
The Canoo truck is 184 inches long or just slightly longer than a Toyota Corolla. This one it is much shorter than the Tesla Cybertuck, but the bed, at six feet, is only six inches shorter. (However, Cybertuck sits more people.) Canoo’s cargo bed also has an extension that can slide, providing two extra feet in length.
The body shape of the Canoo truck is similar to some trucks from the 1950s and ’60s, such as the General Motors Corvair pickup, the Jeep Forward Control truck and the Volkswagen Type 2 pickup, which was based on the VW bus.
Removing the engine also allows for more storage space inside the truck, in addition to just the loading bed. There is extra store in front under the cab, for example. The folding door at the front of the truck can also be used as a work table, in the same way that people often use pick-up hatches.
Similarly, the doors fold from the sides of the cargo bed to allow easier access there. These doors can also be used as workbenches.
Canoo expects the truck to produce up to 600 horsepower and 550 pounds of torque from two electric motors, which is more than a Ford F-150 with a V8 engine. The truck will be able to drive more than 200 miles for a fee, the company said.
Canoo previously unveiled two vans, one a work truck and the other a “lifestyle” passenger truck. The vans and pickup are based on Canoo’s skateboard platform that allows a variety of body styles.
