Fauci’s remarks come as some states have already begun lifting coronavirus restrictions amid a nationwide decline in cases, hospitalizations and deaths, as well as an increase in vaccinations. Some states, including Texas, have moved in recent days to increase the pace of public life, lifting all coronavirus restrictions, including mask warrants and allowing full meals.
However, Biden and Fauci warned that lifting restrictions before enough people were vaccinated could reverse progress after the United States emerged from what the president called a “dark winter.”
According to the CDC, more than 90 million people in the United States have received vaccines.
During his first prime-time speech on Thursday evening, Biden supported the administration’s efforts to increase the distribution of vaccines, including a call to the country for all adults to be eligible for a vaccine by May 1.
The president also hinted at future CDC guidance for vaccinated Americans.
“In the coming weeks, we will issue additional guidance on what you can and cannot do once fully vaccinated to reduce confusion, keep people safe, and encourage more people to get vaccinated,” he said.
Biden said that if people remain vigilant and vaccinated, Americans will be able to gather in small groups until July 4.
“This does not mean big events with many people together, but it means that small groups will be able to come together,” he continued.
