On Monday, President Luis Abinader presented the Medal of Merit to 14 outstanding women from different fields of national life, in a ceremony held in the Eduardo Brito Hall of the National Theater on International Women’s Day.
Music, tears and many emotions were experienced in the morning during the awards ceremony for women fighters who are an example of perseverance. This year they will receive for the first time more than one medal, other prizes such as housing and pensions, donated by President Luis Abinader; a vehicle for the Reserve Bank; making documentaries, publishing books and cultural exchange trips.
Through an audiovisual, a part of the life of each of these women was known, some with disabilities that did not prevent them from developing in different fields.
The President assured that his Government was firmly committed to women and that their rights “their struggle for a decent life, a fair wage and their right to a life without violence are unanswered demands”.
“As President of the Republic and on behalf of the Dominican people, I want to recognize in you all those women who gave their lives to break the yoke of discrimination, inequality, the lack of opportunities, as well as the social exclusion and the dissipated cultural, political and historical erasure of women, “the president stressed.
Abinader pledged to redouble efforts to eradicate inequality in the country.
“On March 8, I promise to speak to you, and I can announce that the Dominican government will redouble its efforts to bring about the change we need to move forward in eliminating all discrimination and betting on real equality between men and women.” said Abinader.
The president stressed that the state will work to equalize women’s wages in addition to progress in maternal mortality.
“In our country there will be no different salary for work of equal value; we will end the technological and digital gender gaps, with violence against women in all its forms; we will make sure that maternal mortality is not a big concern, that they disappear teenage pregnancies, so that the mothers of the head of the family have access to decent housing, “the head of state said.
Women’s Minister Mayra Jiménez stressed that “International Women’s Day, which serves as a framework for this act, is also favorable to pay tribute to working women who have fought and given their lives for working conditions. better and for the protection of fundamental rights “.
The winners are; in education, Quénida Lora; Culture, Inés Páez; Professional, science and technology, Vivian vagabond; municipalist, Aminta Volquez; Entrepreneurship and innovation, Nieves Pappaterra; Inclusion and equality, Evangelina de la Cruz; Sports, Angelica Cruz Martinez; In the use of the community, Gilma taveras; Outstanding business woman, Peira Tatis Delay; Outstanding woman abroad, Lieutenant Colonel Marisol Chalas; Politics, Yadira Henriquez; Health, Edith ramirez; The work, Daysi Montero; and posthumously, Guillermina Session.
The ceremony was attended by Vice President Raquel Peña; the first lady, Raquel Arbaje, who offered the winners a post-premiere lunch at the National Palace.
