Detroit Pistons, Blake Griffin accepts termination of contract, becomes free agent

Blake Griffin, a six-time NBA player, has agreed to terminate his contract with the Detroit Pistons and will become an unrestricted free agent, sources told ESPN.

The Brooklyn Nets, Golden State Warriors, Miami Heat and Portland Trail Blazers are expected to be among the teams Griffin will consider for his next stop, sources told ESPN.

Griffin, 31, will make a decision on his next quintet after holding talks with interested teams, sources said.

Finding a deal for Griffin, who had $ 36.6 million left this season and $ 39 million in 2021-2022 before the purchase, was an insurmountable challenge for the Pistons. Detroit has finalized a pay cut for the free agency in negotiations with Griffin’s agent, Sam Goldfeder of Excel Sports, because the parties have agreed that it will leave the list active on February 15 pending a transaction or acquisition.

Detroit has undergone a complete rebuild under General Troy Weaver in its first year, and the opportunity to offer minutes to the youngest players in the franchise is a priority for the Pistons.

The injuries dramatically changed Griffin’s game, eliminating the high-speed attacks that marked his All-Star career. He is averaging 12.3 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.9 assists for Detroit this season.

Griffin was traded after less than a season on his maximum five-year contract, with $ 171 million with LA Clippers, which arrived in Detroit at the end of January 2018.
