Man sentenced to 30 years for poisoning his former partner who demanded the distribution of assets

The second collegiate court in Santo Domingo Este, sentenced a man to 30 years in prison, after being found guilty of poisoning his former partner with herbicide, in September 2018, in the Villa Mella sector of this jurisdiction.

The court, presided over by Nelson Romero and composed of José Augusto Santos and Yuri Cuevas, sentenced Cristino de los Santos Figuereo to that sentence, after accepting the opinion presented by the Public Ministry.

In the operative part of the sentence, the judges ordered Santos Figuereo to serve his sentence in the Correction and Rehabilitation Center in San Pedro de Macorís, while they ordered the payment of a compensation of three million pesos.

At the hearing, trial prosecutor Ivette Mateo had asked the defendant to plead guilty to the charges against him and, consequently, to be sentenced to the maximum penalty for aggravated premeditated murder, prosecution and poisoning.

According to the investigation carried out by the investigating prosecutor Juan Miguel Vásquez Minaya, of the Final Litigation Department, de los Santos Figuereo returned to the country from the United States on September 29, 2018 and presented the victim at home, located in the Máximo Gómez urbanization, in Villa Mella, in the municipality of Santo Domingo Norte, to discuss with her a process of separation of property.

He points out that the woman told him that she was feeling bad because of a diabetes process she had developed, a situation that the aggressor took advantage of to prepare an alleged remedy and assured her that this would improve her.

However, the preparation caused more discomfort to the victim, which is why she had to be transferred to the hospital, where she died two days later.

According to the autopsy report, the woman died of acute herbicide poisoning.
