With deep sorrow, the Cuban Institute of Art and Film Industry reports that prominent director of photography Raúl Pérez Ureta died in Havana on Wednesday.
Ureta studied journalism, film specialization and theater performance. He began working at the Institute in 1961 as an assistant camera animator in the Cartoon Department. He later worked as a camera assistant and sound recorder at ICAIC Noticiero in Latin America, until 1965 he started as a cameraman and worked in over 800 editions of the weekly news.
Over time, Ureta became a cinema and began collaborating with important Cuban film directors. He also worked under foreign filmmakers such as Fernando Birri and Ruy Guerra.
His filmography includes titles such as Madagascar (Fernando Pérez, 1994), Vertical Love (Arturo Sotto, 1997), Havana Suite (Fernando Pérez, 2003), Perfect Wrong Love (Gerardo Chijona, 2004), The Good Demons (Gerardo Chijona, 2017) and Insumisas (Fernando Pérez, 2018).
He was a professor at the San Antonio de los Baños International School of Film and Television (EICTV), a member of the Union of Cuban Writers and Artists (UNEAC) and the Union of Cuban Journalists (UPEC).
