The Jets Douglas may need to break his own rule for Deshaun Watson

Jets general manager Joe Douglas can’t answer any direct questions about Deshaun Watson, while the star defender stays with the Texans, but was asked an indirect question about him on Wednesday.

How would Douglas feel about trading multiple selection projects to acquire a player? His response may disappoint Jets fans.

“Finally, for us to get to where the big teams are, the most consistent teams are, do this through the project,” Douglas said. “It’s the friendliest sports market on the team. For us to truly be that team that is constantly competing for the Super Bowls, we have to fight the draft picks. ”

This should not be interpreted as Douglas rules out a transaction for Watson. It was a hypothetical question asked on a Zoom call. There is no indication that the Texans are ready to change Watson, who asked to be moved. Otherwise, the price will be exorbitant, probably starting with three options in the first round. This would be against Douglas’ philosophy of building through the project, but Watson could be a player who deserves to break this rule of thumb.

Douglas did not go crazy in the free agency last year, instead he chose to sign many players in short-term transactions for less money. Since the free agency will come on March 17 this year, Douglas has $ 76.1 million in estimated cover space (via Over The Cap) and holes in his entire list. Will he be more aggressive this year in the free agency?

“We are in a better position than at this time last year. I would say that our philosophy and position have not changed, however, “said Douglas. “Our goal and our plan is to be a team that really builds this by sketching and hitting sketch selections. Obviously, using the free agency to complete our list. If opportunity and value meet, this is where we will be aggressive and get someone, we feel good to help this team not only on the field, but also with the culture inside the building. Although we are better positioned, I think the philosophy has remained the same. ”

New head coach Robert Saleh recently met with defender CJ Mosley recently at Jets Florham Park. Mosley gave up last season and missed all but two games in 2019, his first season with the team. The Jets expect to reclaim Mosley in 2021. Mosley has four more years for the $ 85 million five-year deal he signed in 2019.

“She came and greeted me. It was great to meet him, “Saleh said. “I am not going to go into the details of our conversation. My expectations are no different from any other player here. For the CJ, he will continue to be the professional from the day he was recruited and the leader he was in and find ways to improve every day. . ”

Saleh was asked about his opinion of the Jets’ prospects after six weeks at work.

“It simply came to our notice then. We will win championships here, “said Saleh. “To give you a timeline, I would like to know. I would go to Vegas. ”
