Florida State men’s basketball coach Leonard Hamilton has agreed to a five-year extension until the 2024-2025 season, which will pay him $ 2.25 million annually plus bonuses, the school announced Monday.
Hamilton, 72, is the most successful coach in school history and has the Seminoles on the verge of winning ACC regular season titles. Florida State is currently 14-4 and ranks first in the ACC and is the best ranked team in the league, 11th in the latest AP poll.
In his 19th season at Florida State, Hamilton won the ACC Coach of the Year three times, two ACC titles and took the Seminoles to seven appearances in the NCAA Tournament.
Hamilton’s contract expired last year, but given the coronavirus pandemic and financial constraints within the Florida Department of Athletics, the two sides worked to make a deal.
Although his salary remains the same as the previous contract, Hamilton has a bonus structure that would allow him to earn more than $ 2 million extra if he reaches all of his benchmarks. These include winning $ 150,000 to win the regular season ACC, $ 200,000 to win the NCAA tournament, an additional $ 50,000 to be a top-4 and more depending on how far the team is advancing.
“Coach Hamilton has done so much for this basketball program and this university that it’s hard to put into words,” Florida athletic director David Coburn said in a statement. “What he does with his young people, both on and off the field, is truly remarkable. I know both the president (John Thrasher) and him as a university treasure, and right now he is receiving the national recognition he deserved. for so long. He embodies all the qualities that make a great leader and we are proud and excited to have him as a coach as much as he wants. “
