Another 651 COVID-19 cases, 17 deaths, 22,092 vaccinations reported Friday in Utah

SALT LAKE CITY – The number of COVID-19 cases in Utah rose 651 on Friday, with 17 more deaths reported, according to the Utah Department of Health.

Eight of those deaths occurred before Feb. 5, but were still being investigated by state doctors, according to the health department.

The Department of Health now estimates that there are 17,979 active cases of the disease in Utah. Another 22,092 doses of the vaccine have been given since Friday, according to the health department.

The average continuous number of seven positive days a day is now at 694, according to the health department. The positive daily test rate for that period compared to the ‘people over people’ method is now 12.3%. The average positive seven-day test rate calculated using the ‘test-by-test’ method is now 5.6%.

There are now 231 COVID-19 patients currently hospitalized in Utah, including 94 in intensive care, state data show. About 73 percent of Utah’s intensive care unit beds have been filled since Friday, including about 77 percent of the intensive care unit’s beds at 16 state-run hospitals. About 53 percent of Utah’s non-ICU hospital beds are occupied on Friday.

A total of 682,536 vaccines were administered in the state, up from 660,444 on Thursday. Of these, 239,877 are the second dose of vaccine, according to the health department.

The new figures indicate a 0.2% increase in positive cases on Thursday. Of the 2,194,674 people tested for COVID-19 in Utah to date, 16.9% tested positive for COVID-19. The total number of tests performed increased on Friday to 3,781,119, increasing by 15,599 compared to Thursday. Of these, 5,498 were tests in individuals who had not been previously tested for COVID-19.

Friday’s total in Utah gives 370,084 confirmed cases in total, with 14,628 total hospitalizations and 1,907 total deaths from the disease. A total of 350,198 cases in Utah COVID-19 are now estimated to be recovered, state data show.

Spencer Cox, the governor of Utah, offered an update on the pandemic on Thursday.
