The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, Orlando Jorge Mera, reported that the “La Manaclita mining project” will not be completed in Loma Miranda after Falconbridge Dominicana took over a request to submit the project to the environmental management process.
He also reported that the Ministry had received a formal communication from the company’s directors indicating that they had taken the decision to withdraw the aforementioned request.
It is recalled that the company Falcon Bridge Dominicana (Falcondo) requested an extension from the entity mentioned above to continue its mining activity in Loma Miranda.
In this regard, Orlando Minister Jorge Mera said that in his administration “the commitment is and will continue to be to protect the environment, natural resources and ecosystems of the Dominican Republic.”
He specified that the request made by the mining company was received given that Law 64-00 on environment and internal regulations specifies that the ministry must receive requests made by a natural or legal person and then study what is most convenient. for the conservation of the country’s natural resources.
Jorge Mera explained that the institution he leads will continue to comply with the judicial decisions taken on Loma Miranda and the technical studies that were previously carried out in that area.
“Our position is to comply with what is expressed in legal proceedings and technical studies that precede the current scenario, as well as the principle of prevention set out in Article 8 of the General Law on Environment and Natural Resources (64-00),” said Jorge. Mera in a statement.
