Magic: The Assembly is set to announce new crossovers with other popular fantastic properties, including Lord of the Rings and Warhammer 40,000. Hasbro will announce the crossovers later today at an investor event, along with a reorganization that will turn Wizards of the Coast into its own division. The Wall Street Journal was the first to report that Warhammer 40,000 and Lord of the Rings they will both come to Magic: The Assembly, with Lord of the Rings obtaining a complete expansion. It is currently unclear whether Warhammer 40,000 will also receive a full expansion or if it will be a Secret Lair drop similar to a crossover with zombies.
The Wizards of the Coast had a massive 2020 revenue of over $ 800 million Magic: The Assembly and Dungeons and Dragons. The Hasbro division is about to double its revenues between 2018 and 2023 due to the growth in the two main properties. While Magic: The Assembly has found new popularity due to the growth of digital Magic: Arena Gathering game, Dungeons and Dragons added millions of new fans thanks to an accessible set of rules and increased exposure in pop culture. In particular, the two brands have also had several crossovers in recent years, with two D&D campaign books published based on Magic: The Assembly settings and a future Magic: The Assembly set of cards based on the D&D Forgotten Realms setting that will come later this summer.
As part of Hasbro’s reorganization, the new Wizards & Digital division will host Wizards of the Coast assets, with a focus on expanding existing games, creating new ones and overseeing digital licensing. The other divisions will be a consumer project division that includes toys, while entertainment will be licensed, distributed and produced for film and television content.
