WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – A Wichita breast cancer specialist shared concerns about the side effects of the COVID-19 vaccine for breast cancer survivors.
Dr. Therese Cusick said she saw many of these patients in Wichita with a common side effect after receiving blows, swollen lymph nodes in the breast area.
The vaccine can cause temporary swelling of the lymph nodes on the side of the vaccine and scares women that their cancer has recurred.
“For most people this is not going to happen, but for some people, it is happening, so it is still very important to get vaccinated,” said Dr. Cusick. “We just want to avoid unnecessary worries and there is no reason to cause anxiety when everything will improve on its own.”
She asks women to shoot themselves in the opposite arm of the cancer and get a mammogram before getting vaccinated.
If you have already received the vaccine, she recommends that you delay your mammogram for 4-6 weeks.
