WINDERMERE, Florida, USA – Former footballer Johnny Damon was arrested in Florida on Friday for resisting a police officer after being asked to stop his vehicle on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, according to court and prison records.
Damon, 47, a former Major League Baseball All-Star player, was enrolled in Orange County Prison early Friday after the incident in Windermere, Florida, a wealthy suburb of Orlando, popular with professional athletes. He was charged with nonviolent resistance by a police officer, a first-degree felony.
An online court list did not include the name of a lawyer for Damon who could give statements on behalf of the former player.
Prison files show that Damon’s wife, Michelle Mangan-Damon, was also arrested.
Damon, who grew up in Orlando, was a two-time All-Star player who played for seven major league teams from 1995 to 2012. He was a key player in the Boston Red Sox that won the World Series in 2004 and broke the drought history of the 86-year-old untitled franchise. He was later signed by Boston’s bitter rivals, the New York Yankees, whom he helped win the 2009 World Series.
