As Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) continues to limit damage during his ill-timed trip to Cancun during a once-in-a-lifetime Texas disaster, text messages claim his wife is bragging about the trip to neighbors and friends in advance originate.
Cruz has suggested that he only went on a spontaneous vacation to appease his daughters, but reports from Heidi Cruz first reported by local news outlet Reform Austin paint a very different picture, one of a happy escape.
In texts confirmed by two people in the text messaging chain, Heidi Cruz invited neighbors for an escape from her “freezing” house.
‘Can or does someone want to go away for a week? Maybe we’ll go to Cancun, ”she reportedly wrote early Wednesday, citing a“ direct flight ”and“ hotels with capacity ”.
“Seriously. COVID test to come back, which we’ll take there,” she continued.
With many Texans struggling to get water and rationing food as the disastrous freezer storms the supply chain, Heidi Cruz enticed neighbors with details about the planned trip, including an expensive stay at The Ritz-Carlton in Cancun Wednesday to Sunday at $ 309 per night.
She seemed at least somewhat aware of those trapped behind: “We have a gas stove, so we can at least heat little water, so we’re happy to help everyone too.”
Neither Cruz nor his wife have responded specifically to the messages so far, but after leaving the trip early amid mounting calls for resignation, Cruz offered an apology that he was able to muster Thursday night.
With protesters shouting “Dismissal!” in the background, the Texas senator admitted to reporters on camera that the trip was “clearly a mistake.” But he doubled down on his claim that he was just doing his dad and had always intended to “ work remotely. ”
“It was not my intention [the trip] To be understood as … somehow diminishing the suffering and hardships that other Texans had experienced, ”he said.
For some, Cruz’s final remarks may be hard to believe after he issued a series of wistful statements to downplay the trip – initially saying he had only traveled one night to accompany his daughters, despite his copious luggage, and that it ‘ are girls ”who insisted on the trip.
Indeed, the senator’s claim of a one-night trip fell apart Thursday, following reports that the Texas Republican rebooked his flight back to Houston that morning, after initially staying until Saturday. And after returning on Thursday night, he dodged a reporter’s question whether he had returned earlier because he felt guilty or simply because he had been caught.
